UPDATED: Dennis Oland Is Denied Bail Pending Outcome Of His Appeal

Dennis Oland has been denied bail pending the outcome of his appeal.

Justice JC Marc Richard delivering the decision in a Fredericton courtroom. In a 14-page document Richard says that “”should [Dennis Oland] be released in these circumstances, the confidence of the reasonable member of the public in the administration of criminal justice would be undermined.”

Richard says that Oland has not established that his detention is not necessary in the public interest.

Oland sat at the back of the small courtroom in the prisoner’s box, in between two sherriff’s deputies, with his feet shackled. He was wearing a brown jacket and tie. There was little in the way of reaction to the decision Oland and his wife Lisa Oland held hands for a brief moment before he was led out of the courtroom. He was taken away in a sherriff’s van, chained at the wrists and feet, and not showing any emotion.

Only one of Oland’s defence lawyers was in the courtroom for the decision. While Jamie McConnell was present, both Alan Gold and Gary Miller were absent.

Oland has appealed his second-degree murder conviction in the death of his multimillionaire father, Richard Oland. The appeal will not be heard for about eight months because a transcript of the lengthy trial must be created.

Oland’s wife and mother Connie Oland issued a joint statement after the decision was delivered:
