New Brunswick Considering Adding ‘Family Day’ To List Of Statutory Holidays

The provincial government is considering adding a statutory holiday in February to recognize New Brunswick families.

Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers making the announcement today and says the holiday would give New Brunswickers a chance to take a break and spend a day with their families, which could lead to a more engaged and productive workforce.

Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry says before a final decision is made all the factors will be weighed out, which include possible impacts for both employees and employers.

If the province gives the green light on the new holiday, it would bring the number of statutory holidays in the province up to eight.

The time between New Year’s Day and Good Friday is the longest span of the year without a paid holiday.

Last year, Nova Scotia became the seventh province to introduce a paid holiday in the month of February that celebrates families, joining Prince Edward Island, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
