Dennis Oland To Be Sentenced Tomorrow For Father’s Murder

Sentencing is scheduled for tomorrow for Dennis Oland, who was convicted back in December of second-degree murder in the brutal death of his father Richard Oland following a lengthy and high-profile trial at the Saint John Law Courts.

The body of Richard Oland was found face down in a pool of blood in July of 2011 in his investment firm office on Canterbury Street in Saint John. There were 45 separate blunt and sharp force blows to Richard Oland’s head, hands and neck administered by two separate sufaces.

47-year-old Dennis Oland was found guilty following about 30 hours of jury deliberations.

A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence however parole eligibility can be set anywhere from 10 to 25 years. The jury recommended Oland serve 10 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Oland is also looking to be granted bail pending his appeal and that hearing is being held the day after sentencing in Fredericton.

CHSJ News reporter Laura Lyall is going to be covering both the sentencing and the bail hearing and will be live-tweeting. You can follow along on the CHSJ News Twitter page or the Wave News Twitter page.
