The Canadian Cancer Society of New Brunswick is applauding the provincial government for including an increase in tobacco taxes in the budget.
Senior Policy Analyst Rob Cunningham says the increase will take place in two phases.
Cunningham says the first phase will include an increase of $6.52 per carton, which has already been enforced, and another $6.52 starting next February.
He says higher tobacco taxes and higher prices is a great way to reduce the number of smokers.
Cunningham says teenagers are especially price sensitive because they have less money.
He says the increase works and advances health objectives.
