Two Fires In NB Leave Many Temporarily Homeless

It was a difficult weekend for the Canadian Red Cross in the province, after a fire in Bathurst damaged its office.

The devastating fire destroyed two commercial buildings, that also contained upper level apartments, and left many tenants displaced.

Two adjacent buildings were damaged and were evacuated, as a precaution after the fire broke out overnight on Friday. It was early Saturday morning before firefighters finally got it under control.

The Red Cross set up a temporary centre and emergency shelter for those in need.

Donations of household items and clothing are being accepted at the Royal Canadian Legion on St Peter Ave in Bathurst, this week only.

There’s no word yet what started the fire.

In a second fire, last night, six people have been left temporarily homeless after their home near Edmundston was extensively damaged.

The family was offered blankets and personal-care items, but insurance is expected to take care of emergency lodging, food and clothing for the couple, two teenaged children, and two grandparents who lived in an attached apartment.
