Child poverty in Saint John is not getting any better according to the Human Development Council which has crunched the numbers from Stats Canada.
Randy Hatfield of the Saint John Human Development Council says the child poverty rate has risen to 31 per cent, the highest of any city in the country but in Crescent Valley, the Waterloo Village area and lower west side of the city, it’s up to 49 per cent.
He says a more generous child tax credit would help along with a pharmacare program since 70 thousand people in the province are not covered for prescription drugs.
Hatfield says it’s difficult to get ahead if you’re suffering from chronic health problems.
