Brown Sports Jacket, Red Grocery Bag Entered Into Evidence At Dennis Oland Trial

A brown sports jacket, a red reusable grocery bag and various DNA extracts among the items entered into evidence on day 11 of the second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland at the Saint John law courts.

Richard Oland’s secretary has testified that on July 6, 2011the day before the body of Richard Oland was discoveredhis son Dennis Oland arrived at Far End Corporation wearing a brown jacket. At the start of the trial Crown prosecutor PJ Veniot stating a brown jacket that still had a drycleaning tag on it was later seized from Dennis Oland’s home. Four areas of blood were found on it and the DNA profile matched that of Richard Oland.

The husband of Richard Oland’s secretary has testified about seeing a man walking into 52 Canterbury Street on July 6 at 5:20pm carrying a red tote bag.

The court hearing from forensic identification officer Sergeant Mark Smith about a chemical test done on the sink in the bathroom outside of Richard Oland’s office which showed a presumptive positive result for blood. A swab of that reaction was also entered into evidence. Sgt. Smith testified Friday about another test done on a piece of stained rolled-up paper towel in the garbage can of that same bathroom which indicated it was stained with blood.

As well, a box containing a fork and drinking glass seized from the Bourbon Quarter on May 5, 2015 that Sgt. Smith says is related to Derek Oland, Dennis’ uncle, being entered into evidence. Sgt. Smith saying that those items were sent to the RCMP lab for DNA purposes and were returned to the forensics office on July 9, 2015.

It’s expected that Sgt. Smith will be back on the stand Tuesday morning when the trial resumes. He first took the stand on October 1.
