Dennis Oland Murder Trial Hears About Stained Paper Towel Found In Bathroom

A forensic identification officer testifying at the second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland about a piece of stained rolled-up paper towel found in the second floor bathroom of 52 Canterbury Street, saying a test he did indicated that paper towel was stained with blood.

On day 10 of the trial Sergeant Mark Smith of the Saint John Police saying he then seized that paper towel along with the bag and the rest of the contents from the garbage can. That was on July 9, 2011—two days after Richard Oland’s battered body was discovered face down in a pool of blood.

Smith also saying that day he also took measurements of the inside of the Far End Corporation office on the second floor of the building, created a rough sketch of the office itself, and took a blood swab from the main pool of blood on the floor of the office.

Smith earlier testifying that there were small loose hairs found in between Richard Oland’s fingers during his autopsy—which took place on July 8, 2011.

It’s expected that Sergeant Smith will be back on the stand on Monday when the trial resumes.

65 days have been set aside for the trial which is being held at the Saint John Law Courts.
