NDP Leader Tom Mulcair Promises EI Premium Freeze

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair made a campaign stop in Moncton today to discuss Employment Insurance.

He said an NDP government would hold EI premiums steady for four years, and invest in expanded training and benefits for young Canadians, precarious workers and new parents.

“Under our plan we will create over 90,000 new training and work transition opportunities that will help young people get their start so more Canadians can find a permanent place in the workforce,” says Mulcair.

He emphasized both the Liberal and Conservatives have raided the EI fund in the past.

Mulcair said the Liberals took more than $50 billion dollars from the EI fund, and made significant cuts to benefits in the 1990s.

“I’m proud to announce that an NDP government will restore fairness to EI,” says Mulcair. “We’re going to protect EI premiums so that they pay for EI benefits and that they aren’t treated as the government’s piggy bank.”

Mulcair said nearly 70,000 New Brunswickers received EI in 2013-2014.
