Fourth Less Costly Option For Mactaquac Dam Appears Possible

The end for the Mactaquac Dam, as things stand now, is expected to be in 2030 but people in the province are being asked what they think the future should be.

The 3 options on the table are taking everything down and allow the river to return to a natural flow, build a new generating station or leave the dam in place but generating no power.

Provincial Green Party leader David Coon says the three options would range in cost from 2 billion to 5 billion dollars but NB Power President and C-E-O Gaetan Thomas now appears to be suggesting a fourth option which is to renovate and extend the life of the dam by 15 years at far less cost.

Coon wants to review the social impact and environmental assessments before deciding which option to support.
