Statistically, the numbers of smokers is down, but there’s still a lot of work to do, that according to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Senior Policy Analyst Rob Cunningham says nationally, 19 per cent of the population are smokers, as compared in 1965, when the rate was 50 per cent.
Unfortunately, New Brunswick is a few percentage points above the national average, and Cunningham says there are roughly 37, 000 deaths per year due to smoking.
New smoking laws went into effect in New Brunswick this week that bans smoking in some public places, as well as the sale of e-cigarettes and their liquids to anyone under 19 years of age.
