A Day Of Commemoration And Healing For North End Moncton

Despite some cool weather yesterday, hundreds of North End residents came together to support one another and beautify the neighbourhood.

Hildegard Beautification Committee Member Jeff Mowat says what looked like about a thousand people came out to plant trees along Hildegard Drive.

He says it was not only to improve the look of the neighbourhood, but also as a living commemoration to the three fallen RCMP officers killed last June.

“The main thing is just seeing everybody telling stories, and all the hugs everyone is giving,” says Mowat. “It’s just a fantastic thing to see the community come together and support each other and the strength we’re getting, it just shows our resolve.”

Mowat says they planted the trees in groups of three all the way down Hildegard from Mailhot to Mountain Road.

“It’s in a beautiful way, and that we’ll look at them and see their strength and then every spring when they flower, we’ll be reminded, actually this time of year when this happens it’s a positive thing and a show of support,” says Mowat.

Mowat says he, and all committee members, are extremely grateful to all the time, effort, money and help the many volunteers and businesses donated in order to make this day possible.
