Initiative Launched To Get More Women In The Trades

A new initiative being launched in the province aimed at getting more women working in the trades. It’s called “New Boots—Progressing Women in Trades”.

Mentorship specialist Helene Savoie says the percentage of women apprentices is still low but some employers see the advantage in hiring women. She points to welding as an example where women have greater dexterity.

Savoie says 40 women have applied for apprenticeships and acceptance of women in the trades is better now than it used to be so what’s needed now are the employers to step up to the plate.

The program needs employers to hire female apprentices in the following trades…….Construction electrical…….Fuel technician……Instrumentation technician……Millwright…….Welding…….Welding fabrication………Carpentry and Crame operation.
