Parents, students and other Dorchester residents will have a better idea tonight, as to whether or not their school will close at the end of the year.
Education Minister Serge Rouselle has the final say, but tonight the Anglophone East District Education Council will reveal and vote on its recommendations.
DEC Chair Tamara Nichol says ultimately, the most important thing to consider is the education of the students, but there is a financial side to it and they can’t ignore that. Education is the second largest budget in the provincial government files. When money is needed, where are they going to look. They are going to look to health first, and then to education.
Dorchester School currently sits at 25 per cent capacity, with only 65 students. The cost of each student is almost $12, 000. That’s up from the average of around $7200.
The Education Minister is expected to have a final decision by June.
Tonight’s meeting will be held in the auditorium at Bernice MacNaughton High School starting at 7pm.
