Food Poisoning Sends 14 People To Saint John Regional Hospital

A mass case of food poisoning over the weekend at the port which prompted a Code Orange mass casualty plan to be activated at the Regional Hospital.

14 members of a Panamanian flagged ship, Balsa 85, docking at the potash terminal were hospitalized, six in intensive care, after eating contaminated tropical fish on board the ship on Saturday.

They became sick a few hours later. It’s believed the fish from international waters had consumed toxic algae.

Samples from on board the ship have been collected by Border Services and the rest of the fish have been disposed of.

There is no departure date for the ship listed on the Saint John Port Authority website. It’s here to pick up a load of potash. 5 crew members remain on board the ship.
