Nursing Home Bed Shortage Called Residency Issue With Health Care Component

New Brunswick is experiencing a crisis involving seniors not being able to find adequate accomodations in the right venue.

Michael Keating, the Executive Director of the Association of New Brunswick Nursing Homes, says they don’t dispute the thinking that too many people are occupying hospital beds that shouldn’t be there.

Keating tells us the shortage of nursing home beds is viewed by most as a health issue while they view it differently. He says it’s really a residency issue with a health care component to it.

Keating says they have developed an operational plan working with with programs like Home First that would allow people and communities to work together to keep them as home as long as possible. Another component would have people go directly from their home to nursing homes and not spend time in hospitals.
