It’s not just sensible to give emergency vehicles on the side of the road more room to move around, but it’s the law.
That’s according to provincial RCMP.
Corporal Yannick Madelaine is a Traffic Services Supervisor, and says in winter situations are more dangerous because of slippery road conditions, and because snow accumulation tends to make roads narrower.
He says collisions can happen in a split second so it’s critical drivers slow down when they see emergency vehicles with their lights flashing pulled over on the side of the road.
Drivers must slow down, and proceed cautiously past stopped emergency vehicles, and even move over into the left hand lane when safe and possible.
Southeast RCMP is conducting an operation this weekend on Highway 2 near Moncton to find drivers who do not follow the law.
Those drivers can face a fine of 293 dollars, including three demerit points.
