A new fleet of arctic patrol ships will be built in Nova Scotia.
The federal government has confirmed the Irving Shipyard in Halifax will be the prime contractor for six arctic patrol vessels.
The work contract is valued at $2.3 billion.
The new contract will mean the shipyard will consistently employ more than 1,000 people for the next five years.
Steel will be cut for the initial icebreaker September 1.
Meantime, the yard is also expected to deliver Canada’s new fleet of warships for the Royal Canadian Navy.
They were awarded the contract for the warships in 2011.
President of Irving Shipbuilding, Kevin McCoy says delivering the whole package keeps the company accountable – as Canada’s trusted agent.
