A young man falling through the ice on the Kennebecasis river while out skating in the dark.
It’s believed he hit a pressure ridge in the ice, and after falling through into water up to his waist, he managed to call 911.
However, the cell connection was lost and emergency crews weren’t sure exactly where he was based on the coordinates that were gathered so they split up to find him – Kennebecasis Regional Police to the Cameron Road and KV Fire to Maliseet Drive and it was police who noticed him coming up the beach shivering profusely.
He was wrapped in blankets and then transported to the SJRH for observation. Platoon Chief Kevin Clynick says while he’s not quite sure of the young man’s condition at this point, he was in fairly good shape when he was taken to hospital.
Clynick warning that while ice can appear safe they always caution that it’s very unpredictable.
