How To Fight The Winter Blues

A lack of sunlight, and limited physical exercise contribute to a sense of lethargy and exhaustion during the winter months.

Master Life Coach Bruno LeGreco says there’s a name for that feeling – and it’s the winter blues which has symptoms including “feeling lethargic, no energy, and a lack of motivation.”

LeGreco adds “what would have been exciting yesterday is maybe not be so exciting today and you have to really push yourself to get yourself going. So the winter blues really take a toll on your energy level. There’s a lack of motivation and willingness to move forward with your day.”

LeGreco says a recent survey by The Weather Network revealed 43 percent of Canadians suffer from the Winter Blues.

“75% of people that experience the winter blues they will say that’s a direct result of lack of sunlight,” says LeGreco. “While 72% will say it’s the cold weather and 25% will say it’s the result of snow so it’s a combination of the weather pattern.”

LeGreco says the best ways to deal with the winter blues are getting lots of sunlight, either outside or with sun lamps, practicing breathing exercises and physical exercise.”

“Whether it’s cardiovascular or working out with weights it’s really getting out there and adding oxygen to your red blood cells which inadvertently help your brain to get a sense of clarity,” says LeGreco. “So adding exercise to your daily routine is key.”
