2014 will be a year of good and bad memories for many Monctonians, but the tragic events of June 4th will be fresh on the minds of many for years to come.
Mayor George Leblanc reflected back on the almost 30 hours residents in the Northwest end of the city spent under lockdown, with many afraid for their families, while mourning the deaths of three RCMP officers at the same time. He says it was incredible how everyone came together and supported each other.
Leblanc says, “In the midst of all of our sadness and tragedy, the real spirit of the people of Moncton began to shine, and in the end, shone very brightly.”
He believes June 4th was the very worst of times for the city of Moncton. It was something that no one would have thought would ever happen here, but residents remained strong, and overwhelming supported each other, especially those who had lost ones.
Many residents learned a new respect for the RCMP on June 4th, after the tragic deaths of Constables Dave Ross, Fabrice Gevauden and Douglas Larche.
