Moncton Firefighters are encouraging students to read, through their annual Firefighters Fighting Literacy program.
Each year they choose a school, and they read to the students one day a week for four weeks.
This year’s recipient was Mountainview Elementary School.
Chris Jackson says this program is not only rewarding for the kids, but for the firefighters as well.
He says they receive letters from the parents that says things like, “Thank you so much. My kids are coming home and they want to read. They’re excited about it, which is a change from before, when getting them to read was a chore.”
Throughout the program, the children keeps logs of the books they have read, and a winner receives a ride to school in a fire truck.
