In just a few weeks time New Brunswick will become the first province in Canada where it’s illegal to tie a dog up for 24-hours straight.
The province’s enhanced animal protection regulations are coming into effect on December 1 and Executive Director of the New Brunswick SPCA Hilary Howes says staff are preparing for the changes.
Howes says they’re having a special training day for officers to bring them up to speed on the Tufts scale, which was developed by Tufts University in the U.S. to evaluate the status of a dog.
Along with the ban on 24-hour tethering, the new regulations also include heftier fines for letting your dog run at-large which is going up to $140-640 from $10-50 and will also allow action to be taken when it comes to improperly confined animals before it starts to affect the animal’s health.
