A Special Council Meeting On Transit Being Held In Saint John Today

Saint John’s Common Council calling a special meeting today to hear a presentation from Saint John Transit where it’s superdeficit will likely come up.

At Monday night’s meeting, council learned of a possible $600 to $800 thousand dollar shortfall facing the transit commission.

At the time, Mayor Mel Norton was asking why they didn’t hear of this sooner and reminding boards and commission that the city is not a bank.

Tom McGraw of the Transit Union who has long complained the transit service is underfunding says common council needs to decide what kind of service it wants to provide.

He says then they have to figure out what the cost of that service is and properly fund it.

McGraw points out Saint John is two million dollars behind Moncton in the subsidy they receive for the same amount of service.
