The two-day hearing that is to begin this morning in Moncton court, could be a historic one.
Bourque is facing three counts of first degree murder. One count automatically comes with a life sentence, but a Judge must decide how long he will serve before being eligible to apply for parole.
The minimum amount of time is 25 years, and the maximum 75 years. Anything over 40 would be the toughest sentence since the death penalty was abolished in the country.
The Crown has already stated it will recommend life in prison with no chance of parole for 75 years.
Victim impact statements are expected to be heard during the two day hearing.
