Number Of Needy On The Rise At Karing Kitchen

The Karing Kitchen is reporting an increase in the number of people dropping by for a meal these days.

The soup kitchen is located in the basement of St. John’s United Church on Alma Street.

Supervisor Phyllis Perry says numbers typically drop off somewhat in the fall but that’s not happening this year.

She says, “The summer is a little busier, only because there is no school, and we have a lot of school kids. If it’s not summer time, they don’t come to eat here, they’re fed at school now.”

Perry says right now about 400 hot meals are being served over the lunch period from Monday to Friday.

She adds many of the clientele are the working poor, so-called couch-surfers and the homeless.
