Political Science Prof Believes Gallant Is Debate Winner

A political science professor at St. Thomas University believes Liberal Leader Brian Gallant was the one who emerged victorious from last night’s debate in Moncton.

With the polls suggesting that the Liberals are out front in the election campaign Tom Bateman says the best the provincial party leader could hope for in the exchange was to avoid getting critically damaged. He says Gallant looked a little passive at times but says none of this was fatal to him.

He says Premier David Alward did manage to land a direct hit on Gallant on the question of natural gas with Alward accusing Gallant of having a contradictory position being against shale gas but in favour of liquified natural gas export terminal in Saint John. He also believes provincial NDP leader Dominic Cardy also did quite well saying he can speak quickly and clearly at the same time.

Bateman says he was interested to see how the debaters would configure the debate saying it ended up being three against two with the smaller parties going against the mainline parties.
