We can often forget how powerful and connected our mobile devices really are. That message from David Shipley of the University of New Brunswick’s IT Services in response to the Hollywood nude picture hacking scandal.
He says a startling amount of people don’t put passcodes on their phones which means it’s really simple to plug that smartphone into a computer and download its complete contents wheras if you put a passcode and turn on encryption on the device you can better protect it.
Shipley says iCloud automatically backs up your content so while you can delete things off your phone you can still find it in the so-called cloud. If you’re not comfortable with that you can turn off the automatic back-up feature on your device which can prevent images from being stored without your knowledge.
He says it’s important when buying new devices to take the time to ask questions about how to set up them up securely.
