SHEDIAC, N.B. – Lifeguards from across the country have travelled to Parlee Beach to compete in the 14th annual Canadian Lifesaving Championships this weekend.
Nearly two hundred lifeguards from six provinces…including more than a dozen from New Brunswick…have come to hone their skills and compete with their peers.
Angela Johnson with the New Brunswick Lifesaving Society says the goal is to practise and get better, but also to support drowning prevention.
“It’s a fun event and the comraderie is really good among all the competitors. There’s people from across the country that are here. It’s a real chance to see people from other provinces and how they do things.”
Johnson says the competitions range from races down the beach to actual rescue missions into the water with boards.
Parlee Beach remains open to the public throughout the competition and beachgoers are invited to come and watch the athletes beginning at 9 a.m.
