Rail line upgrades in Northern New Brunswick underway

Upgrades to the C-N rail tracks in New Brunswick are now underway, much to the delight of a regional public transport advocacy group.

Transport Action Atlantic had been pushing for the upgrades for some time, especially in the northern part of the province where a stretch of bad track had threatened to end Via Rail’s Maritime passenger service.

The provincial and federal governments eventually stepped up with funding to save the line and work started at the end of last month.

Ted Bartlett with Transport Action Atlantic says they hope the upgrades will get people taking the train again.

He says, “What we hope to see from this, of course, is a return to the passenger train speeds that we had just a few years ago. That is a very important first step in bringing rail service in the Maritimes back to what it should be.”

The project is expected to wrap up this fall.
