Keeping Kids Safe During a Heatwave

When the temperatures soar, summer fun can quickly turn into a health risk, especially for children. At BGC Riverview, the safety and well-being of every child in our care is always our top priority, and that means taking extra precautions during periods of extreme heat.

Children are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses than adults. They can become dehydrated more quickly, often don’t recognize the early signs of overheating, and may be so busy playing that they forget to take breaks. That’s why it’s important for parents, caregivers, and community organizations to work together to help keep kids safe during a heatwave.

Stay Hydrated

One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent heat-related illness is to encourage children to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Waiting until they’re thirsty isn’t enough, by then, dehydration may have already begun. Water should always be the first choice, and sugary or caffeinated drinks should be limited.

Dress for the Weather

Lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing helps keep children cool by allowing heat to escape. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can also provide additional protection from the sun when spending time outdoors.

Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely

Whenever possible, outdoor play should take place during the cooler parts of the day, such as the morning or early evening. During the hottest hours of the afternoon, children should have opportunities to enjoy indoor activities or spend time in shaded areas.

At BGC Riverview, we carefully monitor the weather and adjust our programming when temperatures become extreme. Whether that means moving activities indoors, increasing water breaks, or planning quieter activities, we’re committed to creating a safe environment where kids can still have fun.

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

It’s important to recognize the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Watch for symptoms such as:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Dizziness or headache
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Red, hot skin
  • Confusion or unusual behaviour

If a child shows signs of heat illness, move them to a cool place immediately, provide water if they are alert, cool them with wet cloths or fans, and seek medical attention if symptoms are severe or don’t improve quickly.

Never Leave Children in a Vehicle

Even on what may seem like a mild summer day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise dangerously within minutes. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a short period of time.

Sunscreen Matters

Sunburn not only causes discomfort but can also contribute to dehydration and heat stress. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before heading outdoors and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or excessive sweating.

Looking Out for One Another

Heatwaves can be especially challenging for families without access to air conditioning or cool spaces. Checking in on neighbours, sharing information about local cooling centres, and ensuring children have access to safe places to escape the heat are all ways our community can work together.

BGC Riverview Is Here for Families

Summer should be filled with memories, laughter, and adventure, not preventable emergencies. At BGC Riverview, we’re committed to providing a safe, welcoming environment where children can learn, play, and grow, even during the hottest days of the year.

By staying hydrated, taking regular breaks, seeking shade, and watching for the signs of heat-related illness, we can all help ensure every child enjoys a healthy and happy summer.

Stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!
