A former lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick has died.

Marilyn Trenholme Counsell served in the vice-regal role from 1997 to 2003.

She was 92.

In a statement Thursday, Premier Susan Holt says Trenholme Counsell will be remembered for her dedication to improving the lives of people around her.

She was a doctor and spent a lot of time promoting literacy in New Brunswick.

She was a past president of the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick.

“Marilyn advocated relentlessly for early childhood development and literacy and was instrumental in the development of Born to Read as a provincewide program,” Holt said in her statement.

Trenholme Counsell began her political career as the MLA for Tantramar in the Liberal sweep of 1987.

During her time in the government of Frank McKenna, she served as minister of state for family and community services.

After her term as lieutenant-governor, she was appointed to the Senate, where she served until 2008.

Trenholme Counsell was named to the Order of New Brunswick in 2008 and made an officer of the Order of Canada in 2012.
