Nominations open for municipal byelections

Five vacant seats on municipal councils will be filled next month.

Nominations opened Friday for June 22 byelections in four communities.

Two were necessary after the death of candidates.

Ward 3 in Saint Andrews and Ward 2 in Grand Lake didn’t have elections on May 11 after the death of candidates.

Cancellation in such cases is required under the Municipal Elections Act.

There will also be byelections in two words in Nashwaak.

Chief electoral officer Kim Poffenroth set aside an acclamation in Ward 7 of that community after it was determined an administrative error prevented another candidate’s nomination documents from being accepted by the local returning officer.

A second existing vacancy was already in the same community.

Another byelection will be held to fill a vacancy in Ward 2 of Grand-Bouctouche.

Poffenroth said in a statement that because these are new elections, anyone who wants to run will have to follow the standard procedures and submit nomination papers with at least 10 signatures to the local returning officer.

Nominations will close May 29 at 2 p.m.
