No charges will be laid after a man died following an arrest in Shediac more than a year ago.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released its final report into the incident on Thursday.
RCMP officers responded to a call from Ambulance NB at an apartment on May 29, 2024.
Paramedics reported that a 41-year-old man was bleeding and barricaded in the bathroom with a knife.
“When officers arrived on the scene the male was uncooperative and assaultive,” SiRT said in a news release.
“There was drug paraphernalia and broken glass on the floor which could be used as weapon.”
A struggle began as officers tried to move the man to a safer location, and an officer ended up tasing him, said the report.
He stopped breathing but was revived and taken to the hospital, where he died the following day.
SiRT noted that the autopsy report found the cause of the man’s death to be “undetermined.”
The toxicology report indicated there were high levels of cocaine in his system, “which could be the main cause of death,” but there were also other injuries and anomalies present.
Investigators said while the situation resulted in a death, the officer’s actions were “not excessive and were reasonable in the circumstances.”
