Recent Study Suggests Many Farmers Struggle With Mental Health

Life on many farms is far from the rosy image that is nestled in the minds of the public.

From weather to market prices and equipment repairs, farmers have many varying factors to consider.

As reported Farm Credit Canada’s Rooted in Strength publication, over half of Canadian farmers met the study’s criteria for anxiety, while 45% registered high levels of perceived stress.

What’s unfortunate is that 40% of producers nationwide reported that they would feel uneasy about seeking professional help due to what people may think.

Farmers are expected to be strong, and an admission of distress is perceived as weakness.

It is important for those in the agricultural industry to adopt a mindset which accepts the uncontrollable aspects of a life in agriculture, and learn to live within the limits of what can be controlled.

Rebuilding a sense of control is essential. Exercising regularly, practicing mindfulness and improving your support network and seeking counselling can make a big impact on managing stress.

The report also concludes that Canada cannot expect its agriculture sector to grow and expand if it does not invest in farmers’ well-being.
