Some neighbours of Moncton’s new homeless shelter on Albert Street have expressed concern about its location.
House of Nazareth will be running the shelter which is expected to open later this summer.
Executive director Jean Dube says he spoke to business owners in the area prior to last week’s announcement.
“I’ve had great discussions with them. But I can understand them. If I was in business here, I’d be nervous. I’m a former chair of the chamber of commerce. I understand.”
After he showed businesses the plans for the shelter, Dube believes they were reassured.
Given his experience with the existing shelter on Clark Street, Dube doesn’t expect many issues with the new location.
“If you walk down the street when we are fully operational, you won’t even know there is a shelter here… and that’s guaranteed,” he notes.
The shelter will accommodate 120 clients and will have both a “dry” area where being intoxicated is not allowed and a “damp”area where those restrictions don’t apply.
