Student Inspires Lewisville Middle School To Help The Homeless

After seeing a homeless man sitting on Main Street, who looked very sad and lonely, a student from Lewisville Middle School felt the need to do something to help.

11-year-old Caileigh Fagan approached her home room teacher Mr. Kyle Bishop with the idea of a Comfort Care Kit, “She came to me one day and told me how her and her mom had an idea. The next day she brought me a whole proposal. It was refreshing to see how a student wanted to make a difference.”

Caileigh began researching and then came up with a checklist of items she thought homeless people would need, “It is a little thermal bag, and it has things like toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, granola bars, reusable water bottle, socks. Basically toiletry items.”

Through donations, each classroom is making a Comfort Care Kit. They’re also including an inspirational quote in each bag.

“I would like to put together a minimum of sixteen Comfort Care Kits to donate to the YMCA Reconnect Program,” Fagan says.

She admits this is something that people need all year round, “People think that the homeless don’t need help in the summer because it’s not as cold as in the winter. But the nights are still cold and they’re still homeless. They still don’t have a home to go to.”

The school is accepting donations of items and cash. Once the Comfort Care Kits are completed, any remaining items will be used to create additional kits.
