Fire forced tenants from an 18 unit apartment building out into the extreme cold late last night.
The fire broke out in an upper level unit, but smoke spread to the remainder of the Morton Avenue building.
The Moncton Fire department says wind chill values of minus 30, and high winds, made work difficult.
Cold temperatures caused a fire hydrant to freeze and they were forced to find another water source.
A Codiac Transpo bus was brought in for the tenants, while firefighters dealt with the blaze.
The Canadian Red Cross arranged emergency lodging and meals for 16 tenants from 10 apartments. The others are staying with family and friends.
It is expected that it will be at least a day or two before they can return home, due to the smoke and water damage..
There’s no word on a cause, but it is believed to have started in the rooftop sauna of the building..
