Six new public housing units for families in need are expected to open in Moncton within the next few weeks, according to the New Brunswick Housing Corporation.
The announcement was made Friday on Redmond Street, where officials outlined plans for the new two‑bedroom units.
The development was built using modular construction, a method the corporation says is becoming more common across the province as work continues on new public housing projects.
David Hickey, the minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, said the building reflects the province’s response to rising living costs and housing pressures.
“In the face of the affordability crisis, in the face of the housing crisis, our government is choosing to build. We’re going to keep doing that,” Hickey said in a social media post.
Hickey added that the Moncton project is one example of a broader plan to expand construction across New Brunswick.
“We’re going to make sure it happens across the province. This is another example of that. Excited to continue to do so to deliver more family units to this community,” he said.
The province says New Brunswick now has more than 4,600 public housing units, with additional developments underway.
The housing corporation is working with municipalities to identify where new units are needed and plan future projects.
