Over 120 heavy lifters will compete in Moncton at the Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championship.
It’ll be held at the Avenir Centre in Moncton from July 8th to 10th.
Director of Volunteer Recruitment Jill Miller says competitors range in age between 30 and 89 years old, “The best women lifters are going to be putting something in the range of 220 to 242 pounds over their heads. We’re talking big numbers. The best men, you’re looking at 352 pounds to 374 pounds over their heads.”
The Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships is held annually in different parts of the country. Last year it was held in British Columbia.
“You’re going to see people who are, some of them younger, but many of the older people who are taking a heavy weight from the floor and in one movement they lift, it’s called the snatch, bringing that bar above their head into a locked out position and holding it there and being steady with it. In general, they’ll move into a full squat, and then stand up and be completely still. The other lift is called the Clean and jerk. It’s a lift with a narrow grip on the bar. The athlete has to bring the bar to the shoulder in one swift movement. The bar can’t touch the body. It is a really dynamic event,” Miller says.
With preparations underway, Miller adds they are in need of volunteers in the following areas:
- Set up and take down
- Registration Desk, Welcome & Hospitality
- Opening Ceremonies
- Awards Ceremonies
- Administrative Duties & Competition Support
Training and Support is provided for all roles. More information and signup can be found online.
