Vandals Stealing Mail, Targeting Community Mailboxes

RCMP have been investigating mail theft and vandalism to community mailboxes over the last month in various communities of Southeast New Brunswick.

Canada Post says its postal inspectors are aware of these incidents.

RCMP Corporal Hans Ouellette urges residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons, vehicles or activity to police.

“We know that the person or people responsible for these damages are committing these crimes at night,” he says.

Canada Post spokesperson Nicole Lecompte says customers who believe they haven’t received a specific piece of mail should contact the sender and if an expected parcel doesn’t arrive, you should file a claim with the post office.

Lecompte is passing along some tips for customers:

  • Collect your mail daily;
  • If you plan to be away, use Canada Post’s Hold Mail Service to suspend delivery until you return;
  • Use Canada Post’s Flex Delivery service to have the occasional packages delivered to a post office of your choice;
  • Track your items online or on the Canada Post mobile app to follow their progress through our network.

Cpl. Ouellette says the investigation is still in the early stages.
