Renovations at a new centre for women and children in Moncton are well underway.
Planning for the over 23, 000 square foot centre that will be located on Kendra Street has been underway for 5 years now.
Executive Director of YWCA Moncton Jewell Mitchell says they are making great progess, “We’re looking to be finished mid-summer, and we’re pretty excited. If you drive by the site now, you’ll see lots of things happening.”
The centre will be called YW Jean E.S Irving Centre for Women and Children. It will provide 15 units of affordable housing for young moms. The YWCA administration centre is also being moved there. It will also have a fully licensed child care centre that will be for children from birth up until age 12.
Mitchell says applications to fill those units aren’t being accepted quite yet, but it will be very soon, “We are currently talking to folks in the community where those referrals will be coming from. When we have a date, we will be actively seeking young moms who will fill the building.”
