The YMCA of Greater Moncton is taking registrations for it’s community garden
Director of community initiatives, Jaime MacLellan says the province provided specific guidelines on community gardens.
“So we’re going to limit the number of people allowed in the fenced in area and also ask that everyone wheres gardening gloves at all times,” she says.
MacLellan says a hand-washing station will also be set up.
She says they’ll be restricting access to the shed and asks gardeners to bring their own tools.
“But we really wanted people to be able to access the garden, it’s just good for the soul, you get to grow your food and be out in the sunshine.” she says. “We’re going to limit the gathering, obviously, but we still want that social interaction of being able to connect with your neighbour on what you’re growing and sharing tips.”
Garden plots can be purchased for $15, which includes water and workshops as well as garden and soil preparation.
MacLellan says there are 92 plots, including some raised beds for individuals with mobility challenges and a larger plot dedicated to the local food bank.
All the food produced from the food bank plot is used to help families within the community make more nutritious choices and live healthier lifestyles.
