The Peter McKee Community food centre has been operational since last month, but renovations to get all of the programs up and running are continuing.
President of the Food Depot Alimentaire Dale Hicks says the majority of the work on the inside of the building is done, and the House of Nazareth can now set up their thrift shop.
He notes, “The Community garden out back, they’re getting that set up, Garden City is doing that. The next step will be the Teaching Kitchen, which is expected to happen in the fall.”
Hicks says the response so far has been mixed, “There’s a little bit of frustration because we have been working in very closed quarters. Unfortunately we had to open up before we were ready, and we had to do that because we had targeted a date, and we got a bit behind in our renovations. The other food banks that were moving into the Peter McKee centre set dates to close, so the new centre had to open.”
Many of the remarks from users have also been positive though…
A large mural was also painted on the food centre building last week, to help brighten up the outside of the building.
