The travel industry has been abuzz lately about the possibility of Atlantic Canada expanding its current travel bubble to include Cuba.
According to the Cuba Tourist Board, over one million Canadians visited the Caribbean island in 2019.
New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell says it may be a great idea but not necessarily feasible at the moment.
“The risks as of right now (surrounding COVID-19) – in terms of anything that we do with the bubble… would have to be decided upon as a collective – so all four Atlantic provinces would have to agree on that.”
A Halifax-based travel agency has secured relatively isolated hotels along Cuba’s north coast for at least two trips this winter.
However, Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang is advising against any international travel.
As it stands now, Atlantic Canadian travellers would still have to self-isolate for 14 days upon returning home.
