Petition Targets Vehicle Noise Pollution

A Moncton woman has been gathering names for a petition in an effort to crack down on vehicle noise pollution in the city.

In a presentation to Moncton City Council this week, Louise Gilbert said the petition was on behalf of residents who live downtown.

“In the spring, summer and fall seasons, we cannot avail ourselves to our outdoor balconies due to the noise pollution generated by these vehicles equipped with modified illegal exhaust systems.

“While it may be difficult to measure the exact decibel of a vehicle’s exhaust system, it is certainly possible to examine the modification of a loud vehicle,” she told council.

Ward 3 councillor Dave Steeves said he was willing to sign the petition and noted how he was very familiar with a loud vehicle in his own neighbourhood.

City solicitor Nick Robichaud mentioned how an existing bylaw can be difficult to enforce but he urges residents to gather as much information as possible if they encounter a loud vehicle.

Codiac RCMP said few complaints are actually received about loud vehicles but most councillors said their email inboxes are often full of such complaints.

Under the law, Mounties say they only have the ability to fine the driver and not the registered owner of the vehicle.
