UPDATE: Deputy Chief Tesfifies He Did Not Suggest To Officer That He Change His Testimony

The second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland hearing the Deputy Chief of the Saint John Police’s side following explosive testimony on Tuesday from a retired officer who said then-Inspector Glen McCloskey suggested to him that he lie on the stand.

McCloskey testifying that he made no suggestion to anyone, including Staff Sergeant Michael King, involving changing their testimony as it relates to his attendance at the scene. McCloskey testifying that in his mind that King’s retirement was not amicable, contrary to what King said in his testimony. He seemed to suggest that King was bitter about being passed over for the position of Inspector which King has denied.

In cross-examination Alan Gold saying to McCloskey “we can agree that you went too far in the murder scene, you were wrong and you didn’t want that to come out ” – to which McCloskey replies, “I was embarassed that it happened.” Gold stating you told King to lie about it didn’t you, to which McCloskey says no.

Gold stating that McCloskey and Greg Oram were the only officers not called to the preliminary inquiry.

McCloskey also testified today about going into the crime scene on July 7, 2011 a second time out of curiosity. McCloskey saying that when it comes to the back door leading to the alleyway on the second floor outside Far End Corporation on July 7, 2011 he could have opened it. He does not remember if he did anything to the door when he came back outside.

McCloskey testifying, “there’s certainly a lot of things we could have done better at the scene.”
