Citing the loss of a major contract earlier this year, Moosehead Breweries announcing it will be laying off about 70 unionized workers next June.

The workers were informed this morning.

Moosehead President and CEO Andrew Oland says they are disappointed that this step has become necessary.

We asked Oland who that contract was with but he declined to say adding for confidentiality reasons he can’t speak about it but did say it was a large international brewer.

The company will retain between 70 and 80 unionized production employees but the exact number will be determined when planning for the length of daily shifts is completed.

Andrew Oland also said he is confident that the future of Moosehead especially given the recent success of new products like Moose Light Radler which had a successful summer season in the Maritimes and is selling well in Ontario.
