U de M President says name change petition to be reviewed by Board of Governors

A response from Université de Moncton to a petition with thousands of signatures calling for a name change for the facility.

President and Vice-Chancellor Denis Prud’homme stated they received the document last week from a citizens group.

He says the request will be studied at the next meeting of the Board of Governors in April.

“Considering that the name of the university reflects its identity, our objective remains to make the best decisions for the present and future interest of the institution and to do so in a rigorous and orderly manner,” Pud’homme added.

The citizen’s group has requested the name change due to the association with Robert Monckton, who played an active role in the deportation of Acadians.

“We will leave it to our governing bodies to investigate the matter before commenting further publicly,” Prud’homme says.
