Trudeau Touts Canada Workers Benefit In Sussex

Trudeau wrapped up a day in Dairytown at the local high school by talking about the Canada Workers Benefit, which he claims will lift 70,000 people out of poverty.

It’s a revamped version of the Working Income Tax Benefit and the government says it’ll allow more low-income workers to keep more of their paycheque.

“Someone earning $15,000 a year could receive up to $500 more from the new Canada Workers Benefit than they received under the old Working Income Tax Benefit,” Trudeau said.

“That’s extra money than can be used to plan for the future, or help cover everyday costs like groceries, utility bills and rent.”

After his remarks, Trudeau was asked about the EI black hole the gap between workers’ employment insurance and their seasonal employment. He says it’s something that needs to be addressed.

“That’s why we’ve put forward $230-million over the coming years to work with stakeholders to work with the provinces, to work with regional partners,” says Trudeau,

“To ensure that we are creating a solution that, moving forward, won’t keep this problem coming back for far too many workers across Atlantic Canada and in eastern Quebec.”
